The ADR course is for all those involved in the carriage of dangerous goods by road and is a legal requirement for drivers of vehicles transporting dangerous goods.

The drivers of all vehicles (including those with a gross vehicle weight of 3.5 tonnes or less) carrying dangerous goods must have an ADR training certificate. There are exemptions for drivers carrying small loads below the threshold limits, drivers carrying dangerous goods packed in limited quantities, and drivers carrying dangerous goods packed in excepted quantities.

Course topics

ADR Hazardous goods signsThe ADR course is structured as a set of modules to give you flexibility to study the classes which are relevant to you and the goods you are required to carry:

Core module: topics include: an overview of dangerous goods, loading & unloading, load security, basic first aid, fire fighting and emergency procedures.

Tanks: the carriage of dangerous goods in road tanks and tank containers.

Packages: the carriage of dangerous goods in packages (except explosives and radioactives).

Classes: the seven main UN danger classes – Class 2 (Gases), Class 3 (Flammable liquids), Class 4 (Flammable solids), Class 5 (Oxidising), Class 6 (Toxics), Class 8 (Corrosives) & Class 9 (Miscellaneous)

Please note: Explosives (Class 1) and Radioactives (Class 7) are not covered by our ADR courses.

The 9 classes of ADR dangerous goods are as follows:

  • Class 1 – Explosives- (Not a common class)
  • Class 2 – Gases
  • Class 3 – Liquids
  • Class 4 – Solids
  • Class 5 – Oxidising Agents
  • Class 6 – Toxic & Infectious Substances
  • Class 7 – Radioactive – (Not a common class)
  • Class 8 – Corrosives
  • Class 9 – Miscellaneous

The ADR certificate is valid for 5 years at which point compulsory refresher training (ADR Refresher) must be taken no later than 6 weeks before the expiry date of the original certificate. If a new certificate is required after this time then the Initial ADR course must be taken.

ADR Refresher

2.5 days

Refresher course for drivers who hold a current certificate with 6 weeks or more remaining before the expiry date at the time of the course. You can only refresh what is currently on the ADR certificate. If you wish to add additional modules then you must attend the Initial ADR for the extra modules you require.

Qualifications

The course is assessed by up to 10 multiple choice exams. You will only be required to take the exams relating to those modules you take during the course.

A pass must be obtained in all exams in order to complete the course and receive your ADR card.
